The NBA announced a new anti-flopping measure Tuesday. During the Summer League, officials can assess players with a technical foul if they flop.
Wednesday’s action saw the first flopping penalty issued, and it arguably raises some questions about the proposed new protocol.
The Oklahoma City Thunder’s Jaden Shackelford got called for a technical foul for a perceived flop. However, Memphis Grizzlies forward Jake LaRavia appeared to elbow him in the face.
Here’s a look at the NBA’s inaugural flopping foul:

Summer League is serving as a testing site for the flopping rule. The league’s board of governors will convene later this month to vote on any rule changes for the 2023-24 regular season.
Fans have long grown weary of flopping becoming an NBA constant. Steve Kerr also implored the league to take action during the postseason after accusing the Los Angeles Lakers of flopping excessively.
Giving the other team a free throw and possession should motivate players not to constantly embellish contact. However, there could be cases where a legitimate foul is mistaken for flopping.
It’s still early to determine if the anti-flopping rule will stick around beyond the summer.
