Vijay Hazare Trophy: Anushtup Majumder, Shahbaz Ahmed script Bengal victory against Mumbai | Cricket News – Times of India
KOLKATA: Anushtup Majumder sent a fitting reply to the selectors who dropped him for the season-opening Syed Mushtaq Ali (T20) meet by hitting a century against Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy (50-over) Elite Group B match KCA Cricket Ground in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday.
Playing for Bengal for the first time after making a comeback from an injury, the former Bengal skipper scored Bengal’s maiden ton of the season to guide the side to a 67-run victory via the VJD Method in the rain-hit match. The middle-order batsman got good support from Shahbaz Ahmed who too got the three-figure mark scoring 106 off 97 balls. It was mainly due to the duo that Bengal batters managed to dominate their opponents after a long time.
Bengal did not get a good start losing three quick wickets after being put into bat by Mumbai skipper SZ Mulani on winning the toss. But Majumder, like many times before, once again held fort on one side. The 129-run fourth-wicket stand between Majumder and Shabaz took Bengal to a position of strength. Shahbaz opened up after the departure of Majumder’s well-made 110 that came off 122 balls with the help of 14 fours. The all-rounder finally perished in the last over going for a big shot after hitting eight fours and four sixes as Bengal put up 318 for seven in their 50 overs. None of the Mumbai bowlers could restrict the run flow with former India all-rounder Shivam Dube conceding 56 runs in his five overs. Pacer Mohit Avasthi picked up four wickets, three of which in the last over of Bengal innings as the batters went for runs.
Except for Arman Jaffer and Suryakumar Yadav, none of the Mumbai batters could even threaten to run away with the tie. While the former made 47, Yadav scored 49. Mumbai were 223 for eight when rain stopped play after 41 overs. Left-arm spinner Pradipta Pramanik was the pick of Bengal bowlers finishing with three for 33 in his nine overs.
Coach Arun Lal lauded the duo’s effort. “Absolutely marvelous batting by Anushtup. He was shades of what we saw two years ago, just fantastic,” he stated. “The partnership with Shahbaz has been magnificent. It’s good to see Shahbaz among the runs,” he added.
Brief scores: Bengal 318/7 in 50 ovs (Anustup Majumdar 110, Shahbaz Ahmed 106; Mohit Avasthi 4/63). Mumbai 223/8 in 41 ovs (Surya Kumar Yadav 49, Armaan Jaffer 47; Pradipta Pramanik 3/33). Bengal won by 67 runs (VJD method).
