Vin Diesel Confirms Several Fast & Furious Spinoffs Are In Development

Fast X, the tenth installment of the Fast & Furious saga is already a complete success. Following its debut weekend, the film is close to making back its production budget, and is on track to be one of the hits of the year alongside The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.

The newest installment of the franchise will be the first of three that will bring closure to the story of Dominic Toretto and his family, but it is far from being the definitive end to a saga that has proven to be one of the highest-grossing in recent years.

In 2019, Fast & Furious released its first spinoff with Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham as the leads, Hobbs & Shaw, but it didn’t prosper. However, that doesn’t mean they won’t keep trying.

In fact, Vin Diesel confirmed in an interview with Variety that several new stories are in development, including the franchise’s long-announced female-focused project:

“I started developing the female spinoff… in 2017 with other spinoffs. The sooner I deliver the finale, the sooner I can launch all the projects. Look how many characters and great talent there is in the movie… These characters are appealing and we need to see more of them.”

Given the long list of actors and actresses that have passed through the saga since its beginning in 2001, and the large number of characters that appear in each installment, the possibilities for an expansion of the franchise seem endless.

What Other Fast & Furious Spinoffs Could Come in the Future?

Just as when choosing Johnson and Statham to be the first ones to have their parallel project Universal Pictures was guided by the performance of both actors at the box office, there is no doubt that this will be a parameter to take into account for future films or even series.

Following that line, it is possible for Hobbs & Shaw to finally get its sequel now that it seems that the conflict between The Rock and Diesel was apparently left behind. Other interesting names that the saga could follow in the future are Charlize Theron, John Cena or Jason Momoa, who have been villains in the main franchise, although Cena’s character ultimately abandoned the dark side. With these characters, the best option would be to develop a prequel.

If the studio is guided by the demands of the fans, there is no doubt that the one who should have his own project is Sung Kang’s Han, who was indeed brought back to the franchise at the request of the audience. Again, a prequel would seem like the best way to go with this character, especially since his time in Tokyo was very little explored beyond the events of Tokyo Drift.

Finally, beyond the fact that she could be included in the spinoff starring women, the character of Daniela Melchior seems to be a good alternative to tell the story of one of the newcomers to the saga. Introduced in Fast X, Melchior plays the sister of Elena (Elsa Pataki), and her past is completely unknown to fans, so there would be plenty of material to explore and get back to the roots of the story with street racing.
