Viva Magenta: Pantone’s 2023 Color Of The Year

An expressive, rebellious hybrid of red and pink—with blue/purple undertones, Viva Magenta (Pantone 18-1750) has recently been announced the 2023 color of the year. While we have been awash in pink due to the ‘Barbiecore’—and the pop colors of the MOD ‘60s –both trends that have infiltrated the fashion and jewelry worlds, Viva Magenta is deeper and stronger—the colors of rich pink tourmaline, rubellite, spinel, sapphire and garnet with a nod to bright raspberry hues.

In a video introducing the new color, Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, said the new color “vibrates with vim and vigor.

A statement from the company said, ““Viva Magenta is brave and fearless, and a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative.”

One I would say we all need in what Pantone also describes as “an unconventional color for an unconventional time.”

Leatrice Eiseman, the Pantone Color Institute’s executive director, asserted, “As virtual worlds become a more prominent part of our daily lives, we look to draw inspiration from nature and what is real,”. “PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta descends from the red family, and is inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known.”

“Rooted in the primordial, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta reconnects us to original matter,” she added. “Invoking the forces of nature, it galvanizes our spirit, helping us to build our inner strength.”
