As a shopping editor and skin-care believer, I’ve tested thousands of products that promise a healthier, more vibrant face. Plenty of bottles have earned their permanent placement in my medicine cabinet, but there’s one type of treatment that I use multiple times a week for never-fail good skin: peel pads. This method of chemical exfoliation fights dullness, uneven skin tone, acne, and also minimizes fine lines and wrinkles.

My go-to as of late? Volition Beauty ACV Resurfacing Pads ($51, originally $64). They gently remove dead skin cells, evening out skin tone and texture to brighten your complexion and leave your face a baby-soft level of smooth. The formula’s star ingredient is apple cider vinegar, which naturally contains AHAs, which melt away the glue that holds dead skin cells to the surface of your skin, aiding in exfoliation. The addition of glycolic acid (another AHA) boosts its exfoliating prowess, while concentrated witch hazel combats excess oil and shrinks pores), and glycolic acid (another AHA.

I’ve been using these for a few months, and my skin has honestly never looked more vibrant. Not only do I rarely experience breakouts now, but when I do (hello, period), I can count on these ACV pads to help with redness and inflammation. For some context: I have combo-oily skin that’s acne-prone, and my pores clog easily. Exfoliation has been the one skin-care method that’s actually given me consistently healthier skin.

“The benefit of exfoliating your body is to break down and remove dead skin cells from the top layers of the skin and unblock pores to reveal healthy skin cells beneath for a smoother appearance,” founder of SpaRitual, Shel Pink, previously told Well+Good. Pink recommends exfoliating one to two times per week if you have sensitive skin, and up to three to four times a week if you have oily skin.

Volition Beauty ACV peel pads are gentle enough to use on a regular basis (although if you’re just starting out and have sensitive skin, it’s recommended you test a patch of skin before going full force), and I generally follow up with a moisturizer afterward (I’ve been switching between Olay Regenerist Whip and Drunk Elephant Protini Polypeptide moisturizer—both are lightweight but still pack in hydration). Especially in the upcoming colder months that bring dry weather (and dry skin) with them, I’ll likely be upping my usage from twice a week to three times.

Like anything formulated with apple cider vinegar, the smell is, well, vinegar-y. But it’s nothing too aggressive, and the odor doesn’t linger (don’t worry—your face won’t smell like salad dressing all night long). One reviewer on Volition Beauty’s website writes, “The smell is very clearly ACV but a bit milder,” adding, “…my skin absolutely GLOWS after I use this. I usually use this once every few days to maintain a fresh, clear face.”

Do your skin a solid, and get the Volition Beauty resurfacing pads. You’ll thank me later.
