Volkswagen plans to offer sporty versions of all its electric vehicles, even the ID. Buzz people mover.

“We will continuously expand this brand and offer a GTX variant for every ID. model in the future – from ID.3 to the ID. Buzz,” said Volkswagen head of sales and marketing for the ID. family Silke Bagschik.

Volkswagen has never offered a high-performance version of its people movers.

Volkswagen Passenger Cars CEO Ralf Brandstatter previously confirmed a production version of the high-performance ID.X concept will go into production as the ID.3 GTX.

The German automaker also said the ID.4 and ID.5 GTX models “provide a glimpse of the look of the other GTX models with new design accents in black and red”.

Volkswagen didn’t go into specifics about the electric powertrain, outputs or performance potential for the upcoming ID. Buzz GTX, though it could borrow its dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrain from the ID.4 and ID.5 GTX.

The ID.4 GTX and ID.5 GTX were first unveiled in April 2021 and November 2021, respectively, and are both powered by a dual-motor all-wheel drive setup producing 220kW of power and and 460Nm of torque.

Volkswagen claims the ID.4 GTX can do the 0-100km/h sprint in 6.2 seconds, while the ID.5 GTX can do the same sprint in 6.3 seconds.

Claimed range for the ID.X GTX is up to 500km according to WLTP testing, whereas the ID.5 GTX with its sleeker body has a claimed range of 512km.

The ID.4 and ID.5 are fundamentally the same car, but the ID.4 has a more upright body while the ID.5 is a ‘coupe SUV’ with a more steeply raked rear window.

Like the ID.3 and ID. Buzz, they ride Volkswagen’s dedicated MEB electric vehicle architecture.

The latest update to the ID.4 and ID.5 GTX brings more standard equipment such as dual-zone climate control, more USB-C ports, privacy glass, among other additions.

At this stage the regular Volkswagen ID.3 and ID.4 aren’t expected in Australia until late 2023 due to huge Northern Hemisphere demand and our lack of CO2 targets placing us down the pecking order.

The Volkswagen ID.4 GTX and ID.5 GTX on the other hand aren’t locked in for Australia, with a spokesperson for Volkswagen’s local division previously saying there are “no plans at this stage”.

The Volkswagen ID. Buzz people mover also isn’t locked in locally, although it’s high up on Volkswagen Australia’s wish list.

The ID. Buzz is available with a single-motor rear-wheel drive setup that produces 150kW and 310Nm. It also has a WLTP claimed range of 423km.

Volkswagen recently announced it has resumed round-the-clock operation at its main electric vehicle plant in Zwickau, Germany after months of supply chain nightmares.
