This is the era of the sport compact car. New ones are being launched semi-regularly while established players have all received significant updates. Over at Volkswagen, the advent of the new MK8 Golf a few years back brought with it a new GTI and the latest version of the Super Golf, the Golf R.

This 315-hp AWD burning-hot hatch has established itself as the one that can do it all, at any time of the year. However, thankfully for true car enthusiasts, the competition has never been fiercer from Honda and, most recently, Toyota — the GR Corolla is an absolute riot. In a move to readjust the standing of its most potent petrol-powered flagship car, Volkswagen will introduce a new 333 iteration, but be warned, it’s in restrained numbers.

Details, like the run, are limited at the moment but a few things are obvious. One is that it will be yellow, possibly Ginster more than Curry (two colours available as part of the now-defunct Spektrum Program). The other, as suggested by the name 333, this Golf R will get more power. In Euro speak 333 refers to 333PS (328 bhp or about 325 hp) from the turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder EA888 engine, only 10 more than the current version.

As well, and based on images, the Volkswagen Golf R 333 will sport an Akrapovic exhaust for more pops and burbles, a set of cross-drilled brakes behind black 19-inch Estoril alloy wheels, along with some tasteful “333” badging.

We’ve reached out to VW Canada in hopes of a positive response to: “Is it coming to Canada?” But let’s face it, we know better than that; it won’t — because we never get anything good. Even so, we’re looking forward to seeing more of the Golf R 333 when Volkswagen reveals it on May 31.
