The FBI has issued a complaint alleging a volunteer coach at an Oakland County, Michigan middle school filmed himself having sex with one of the school’s 12-year-old students at his home in Detroit.
Named in the complaint is Daveughn Ryan Gray, 20, who is alleged to have arranged an Uber drive to take the girl from a sleepover at a friend’s house to a home in Detroit where he lives with his mother, and enticing her to have sex with him. The sexual encounter was allegedly recorded on his cell phone and a phone the girl had with her at the time.
Officials are seeking federal charges of production, possession and distribution of child pornography against Gray, reportedly an unofficial boys basketball coach at the school.
Police were contacted by a teacher at the middle school after another student reportedly showed her a video screenshot of the encounter as recorded on a cell phone that the girl had borrowed. The screenshot had also been shared on Instagram.
The school isn’t explicitly named in the complaint, identified only as being in Oakland County.
A search warrant was executed at Gray’s home on May 9. Among the items seized was Gray’s cell phone which reportedly has a video recorded on Jan. 15 showing a sexual encounter believed to be between Gray and the girl. No faces are seen in the video.
According to the complaint, filed May 10 in U.S. District Court – Eastern District of Michigan, Gray has denied the allegations, telling investigators that he arranged a meet-up between the girl and a “close friend” of his at the middle school in January. He also reportedly told investigators that he’s not the male in the video because he always shows his face in sex videos that he makes to show the sex was consensual.
Investigators claim it is Gray in the video, noting the person is wearing the same bracelet seen in other videos on Gray’s phone, showing him having sex.
The complaint further states that text messages on the girl’s phone indicate Gray admitted to having sex with her and wanting to have sex with her again.
When interviewed by investigators, the girl reportedly said Gray had approached her outside the school in January and that he initially told her he was 15. He was 19 years old at the time. Gray subsequently communicated with her on social media and said he liked her, the complaint states.
The girl also reportedly told investigators that she believed Gray was attempting to have sex with one of her friends, also. The complaint further states that a parent interviewed by investigators said she had seen Gray flirting with students at the school and told him to stop.
Aside from the federal complaint, Gray was arraigned May 10 in 34th District Court in Romulus on charges of embezzlement and larceny of a building. A personal bond of $10,000 was set, meaning no cash or surety was required to be posted. His next court appearance on those charges is scheduled for May 24.
