You can always tell when there’s a new Star Wars film or TV show on the horizon because all of a sudden there are lightsabers, drones, and spaceships on everything from cereal boxes to video games to household appliances.

Often, the space-epic teams up with automakers to promote new products with special edition builds or designs. (That’s how we ended up with these far-out designs for a Porsche starship.) This time around, as the SW universe prepares to unfurl the prequel tale of Obi-Wan Kenobi, it is hyping the Disney+ television series with a pair of franchise-themed, one-off Volkswagen ID. Buzz electric vans. Or, at least they’re wrapped as such.

The two models represent the famed dichotomy of the Star Wars world. The Light Side Edition — based on the passenger ID. Buzz model — is a combination of Jedi-tunic beige on the bottom and droid chrome on the top, separated by a blue line and blue-tinted windows that represent Obi-Wan’s lightsaber. Both the rim centrecaps on the custom 21-inch wheels and side windows bear Rebel Alliance logos, further signifying this Buzz as one of the good guys.

VW’s Buzz Cargo, meanwhile, has been chosen as the ride of choice for members of the Dark Side (who needs seat belts when you’ve got Stormtrooper armour, I guess?). The ID. Buzz Dark Side Edition takes the Sith’s approach to style, with shiny black lowers and matte black uppers, as well as side lines, lights, and windows tinted red like Darth Vader’s lightsaber. Empire logos appear on centrecaps of the 21-inch wheels and on the side of the van.

Both vehicles also feature underbody lighting in their respective accent colours and special lettering on the rear and fenders in the classic Star Wars Aurebesh font.

“The opportunity to explore how ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ and the Volkswagen brand could come together on a vehicle was pure fun. The themes of good and evil, light and dark aren’t necessarily concepts we apply to cars. The ID. Buzz collaboration offered an unique opportunity to have the cars become graphic reflections of two iconic characters,” says Doug Chaing, Lucasfilm VP and Executive Creative Director.

Fans of Star Wars can catch the new Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney+ right now, while North American VW bus lovers will have to wait until 2024, which is when the long-wheelbase model ID. Buzz arrives.

In the meantime, here’s a commercial of everybody’s favourite drone meeting the smiling EV.
