Waldorf Astoria resort to be built on Tahoe’s north shore

A Waldorf Astoria will be built on the site of the Tahoe Biltmore, on Lake Tahoe’s north shore, hotel giant Hilton announced this week.

The 15-acre resort, with 76 guest rooms and 61 residences, is expected to open in 2027, the news release said.

Hilton has signed a branding and management deal with Newport Beach-based EKN Development, which bought the Tahoe Biltmore property in Crystal Bay last year for $56.8 million. When it announced the Biltmore purchase, EKN said it intended to turn the site “into a branded marquee destination for both locals and visitors.”

The casino and hotel — anchored by a landmark rustic 1940s building — closed in April of this year, and demolition is scheduled for next spring.

Plans for the new resort include a 3-acre beach club, a public shopping promenade, a poolside restaurant and a lounge called Peacock Alley, a nod to the original Waldorf Astoria, in New York City.  The resort will have a gondola-side mountain club at the NorthStar ski resort and will offer transportation to other ski areas, golf clubs, and hiking and biking trails.

The property’s previous owner, Boulder Bay, bought it in 2007 and unveiled redevelopment plans that were approved in 2011 despite community criticism. After a long delay caused by financing issues, local residents argued that modification of the plans warranted a new round of studies. In September 2021, Boulder Bay announced the sale to EKN.

Waldorf Astoria, owned by Hilton, currently has 32 hotels worldwide. The California properties are in Beverly Hills and Dana Point; in Las Vegas, the Mandarin Oriental on the Strip was rebranded as a non-gaming Waldorf Astoria in 2018.
