According to the most recent World University Rankings by Times Higher Education (THE), the global higher-education landscape is shifting as institutions from around the world appear atop lists that traditionally favored Americans.
For the last seven years, the overall THE rankings have set Britain’s Oxford University as #1 in the world. The 2023 results place Harvard at #2 while another Brit, the University of Cambridge, jumps from fifth in 2022 to third this year, above both Stanford University and MIT.
The popular listing published annually includes 1,799 universities across 104 countries and regions and is based on four criteria: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

Just in Europe
Although the practice of university rankings is relatively crowded, with new agencies competing with the best-known and most influential rating bodies — and they use various methodology and criteria for their calculations — most listings seem to have similar results with a few variations in placement.
Although American universities continue to dominate the Top 100, international colleges from different countries appear in greater numbers and better positions than ever before.
The U.S. News 2022-2023 Best Global Universities in Europe starts its rankings with five British Universities topping its list: Oxford, Cambridge, University College of London, Imperial College and King’s College.
ETH Zurich, University of Edinburgh, University of Amsterdam, University of Copenhagen and Utrecht University also in the Netherlands complete the best 10.
“Currently, there are university rankings publishers such as Webometrics that incorporate factors into their algorithms that are related to an institution’s digital presence, the impact of the quality of their online content, and their connections with other networks of external institutions,” explains Universityguru.com which offers data on more than 11,000 universities worldwide.
