Paine steps down as Australia Test captain over sexting scandal

Australia cricket legend Shane Warne has been injured in a motorbike accident, falling off the vehicle and sliding for more than 50 feet.

According to reports in Australia, Warne was riding his bike with his son Jackson when he lost control and the vehicle landed on his ankle.

The leg-spinner is said to have avoided any serious injury and went to hospital as a precaution the following day, having been concerned that he may have broken his foot and damaged his hip.

Warne has been quoted as saying: “The ankle’s not great to be fair, but hopefully, it’s just bruised.

“The hip I think is just bruised where I landed and then my bike landed on my foot, so hopefully it’s not broken. I don’t think I’ll be riding it for a while.”

Despite the accident, he is expected to be part of the Fox Sports commentary team for the first Ashes Test on December 8 as planned.

That Test will be Pat Cummins’ first game as captain after he was named as Tim Paine’s replacement, following the sexting scandal which led to the wicketkeeper’s resignation.

And Warne has backed Cummins to be a success as skipper, telling the Sydney Morning Herald he expects the quick to “do a bloody good job.”

“We want Pat Cummins to be Pat Cummins,” he said. “You only get one chance at the start when you captain to say, ‘This is the way we’re going to play. This is our style of play. This is how things are going to work.'”

“Steve Smith is there to help him out when he’s bowling to keep an eye on things, but otherwise you need to know who’s in charge and that’s got to be Pat Cummins.”

Warne also questioned why Smith has been allowed to return to a leadership role following his involvement in the 2018 Newlands ball-tampering scandal while David Warner has been banned for life.

“With Sandpapergate back in South Africa a few years ago, how can the captain be allowed to take up another leadership role where a player like David Warner, who’s probably got the best cricket brain in the team, isn’t allowed to?” Warne added.

“If you’re going to ban a player but allow the captain to have another chance, it doesn’t make sense to me.”
