Stokes hits Root in the head with a bouncer in nets session

David Warner has fallen short of making his fourth Ashes hundred for the second Test in a row, after getting out for 95 on day one at the Adelaide Oval.

Warner made 94 in the first Test at the Gabba, getting caught in the covers off Ollie Robinson.

He followed that up by going one run better in Adelaide, with Ben Stokes getting him caught in the covers off a short ball.

Speaking on BBC Test Match Special, former England bowler Steven Finn said: “It was a loose shot from Warner. You got the feeling it would be ‘me or you’ in that battle with Stokes.”

On commentary for host broadcaster Fox Sports, Mark Howard said: “Warner on 95 takes it on over the offside and he’s gone! Warner holes out to Broad.

“Stokes breaks through and for the second time in consecutive test matches, David Warner is out just short of a hundred.”

Former Australia leg-spinner Shane Warne added: “I’ve got nothing, I’m speechless. This is so disappointing for Davey Warner.

“He’s played so well, he played beautifully up in Brisbane for 94. This time he’s shelled it straight to the fielder, it nearly burst through Broad’s hands he’d hit it so hard.

“Unfortunately, David Warner’s gone and he can’t believe it. He deserved a hundred.”

Warner’s dismissal marked the 14th time in Test cricket that a player has been out in the 90s in consecutive innings.

Former Australia captain Clem Hill, who has a statue outside the Adelaide Oval, is the only player to have been dismissed in the 90s in three consecutive innings, making 99, 98 and 97 in consecutive knocks in 1901-02.

Warner had put on a 172-run partnership with Marnus Labuschagne prior to his dismissal, with the wicket leaving Australia on 176-2 in their first innings.
