Fire still burning bright for Stuart Broad after Sydney five-wicket haul

David Warner suffered the ignominy of getting out for a pair in the fifth Ashes Test in Hobart, as Stuart Broad dismissed the Australia star for the 14th time in his Test career.

Ollie Robinson got Warner out for a 22-ball duck in the first innings, getting him caught smartly at second slip by Zak Crawley.

And Broad continued his excellent record against Warner in the second innings, with Ollie Pope taking a stunning catch at point.

Warner is now the first opener to get out for a pair twice in the Ashes, having previously done so at Old Trafford in 2019, with Broad accounting for him on both occasions that time.

Speaking on commentary for BBC Test Match Special, former England bowler Jonathan Agnew said: “Warner bags a pair.

“A lovely, diving catch from Ollie Pope – really good. Just the start England needed. They need more than this, but at least they’ve made the start.”

Since the outstanding 2019 series, Broad has dominated Warner in Test cricket.

The pair have faced off in 16 Test innings, with Broad getting him out nine times and Warner scoring just 65 runs at an average of 7.2.

Before then, Warner had been out five times to Broad in 29 innings, scoring 324 runs at an average of 64.8.

The wicket also saw Broad overtake Ian Botham as England’s leading wicket-taker in the Ashes with 129 scalps.

Chris Woakes also picked up a key early wicket in Australia’s second innings, getting number one ranked Test batter Marnus Labuschagne caught down the leg side for five.

“It wasn’t how England quite envisaged getting Marnus Labuschagne,” former England bowler and Ashes winner Steven Finn told BBC Test Match Special.

“We called for early wickets and we’ve got them. Now they have to keep going.”
