Warning to keep Easter treats away from pets

RSPCA WA is warning pet owners to keep their furry friends away from popular Easter treats this long weekend.

Chocolate, hot cross buns and BBQ leftovers are among the top three Easter treats that are toxic to pets, RSPCA warned.

RSPCA WA head vet Shannon Page said even a small amount of chocolate could have heartbreaking consquences for pets and owners.

“Just 50 grams of milk chocolate can be enough to poison a small dog,” she said.

“Signs of poisoning include vomiting, diarrhoea, excessive urination and hyperactivity, while more serious symptoms are depression, coma, seizures and even death.”

Dr Page said chocolate wasn’t the only dangerous food on the table this Easter with hot cross buns, onions and fatty barbeque leftovers on the no list.

Safe ways to celebrate a pet-friendly Easter include egg hunting with animal approved carob chocolate or baking doggy treats.

“Just remember that sharing is not caring when it comes to certain foods this Easter and your pet will thank you for it,” Dr Page said.
