A second half strike from Danny Ward proved to be difference for the hosts at the John Smith’s Stadium on Thursday night.

Full credit has to go to veteran boss Neil Warnock, who took over the struggling side in February on a deal until the end of the season.

Warnock had come out of retirement at the age of 74 to return to Huddersfield – 30 years on from his last spell in charge.

Huddersfield were sitting in 23rd spot at the time of his appointment, and has managed to lift them to 18th place with a game to spare.

The Terriers went into their clash with the Blades in 21st spot – three points ahead of Reading, who they face on May 8.

And they managed to avoid a final game nail biter against the Royals to ensure their survival in England’s second-tier.

Fans chanted in unison, ‘one more year’, towards Warnock after the final whistle as they showed their appreciation to the ex-Sheffield United boss.

But Warnock, who was treated to a guard of honour after Huddersfield’s safety was confirmed, declared in his post-match press conference he couldn’t bare the thought of taking the reins on a permanent basis.

He said: “No, I can’t do ten months of this. I’ll be back somewhere in February I’m sure!

“No, I think the job is done now for me. I didn’t want to leave it on a bad note and getting relegated but the job’s finished now.

“They’re a great group of lads – still a bit naive but a good honest group of lads.

“You only see me laughing and joking and doing pressers but behind the scenes it’s bloody hard work.

“It would have been terrible for me to need to get a result on Monday after what happened with Sheffield United.”
