Warren sheds light on Fury vs Usyk clause set to delay Joyce clash

Promoter Frank Warren has revealed that there will likely be a rematch clause inserted into the Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk contract which is set to delay Fury’s following fight with Joe Joyce. Both Fury and Warren have confirmed that Joyce is the next name on The Gypsy King’s hitlist and that they will square off in 2023.

Fury even promised Joyce a Wembley showdown early next year if the undisputed fight can’t be made. However, all of those plans will have to be put on hold if Usyk and Fury’s representatives agree to fight each other twice.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Warren shed light on the situation. “I’m not sure,” he said. “I mean we haven’t got into that, but I probably think there would be [a rematch clause] because, God forbid, one of them gets a cut eye or anything goes wrong – anything can happen in boxing as we know -then there would be.”

“The four belts are on the line, and the winner gets them. If there is a rematch, I don’t think then the four belts will be on the line for it cause I don’t think the governing bodies will allow it. I think they’ll just say ‘right, you’ve got to get on with your mandatories now.’”

“We’ll keep the belts unified at least for this fight what happens afterwards, god knows what happens.”

There had been concerns that the fight would never happen after the WBA and IBF governing bodies ordered Usyk to face mandatory challengers Daniel Dubois and Filip Hrgovic. However, Dubois – who is next up in the governing body rotation system – is out for six months with a torn ACL, allowing negotiations to go on without disruption.
