The Golden State Warriors could lose one of the core components of their dynasty.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Draymond Green will decline his $27.5 million player option and become an unrestricted free agent. Shortly after his decision became public Monday, new Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy discussed the team’s desire to retain the forward.
“We really want Draymond back,” Dunleavy said, per NBC Sports Bay Area. “What he means to this organization, this team, in terms of trying to win at the highest level, we feel like we have to have him.”

Green isn’t much of a scorer, but he affects the game in every other way. He averaged 7.2 rebounds, 6.8 assists, 1.0 steal, and 0.8 block per game last season.
By playing above his size, the 6-foot-6 All-Star has unlocked lethal small-ball lineups with Stephen Curry and Klay Tompson. The eight-time All-Defensive selection has won four championships during his 11 seasons with the Warriors.
Yet Green’s tenure has also included plenty of controversial moments, most notably punching teammate Jordan Poole during a practice last preseason.
Dunleavy faces some difficult cap decisions with Green entering the open market, Poole commencing a lucrative four-year extension, and Thompson’s contract expiring next year. He said he doesn’t plan on trading Poole, and the Warriors reportedly aren’t worried about keeping Poole and Green on the same roster despite last year’s incident.
