In 1963, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Gideon v. Wainwright, changing the course of American criminal justice. The court said that “lawyers in criminal courts are necessities, not luxuries” and required states to provide an attorney in a criminal case when a person can’t afford to hire one.
Join The Texas Tribune, in partnership with the Texas Indigent Defense Commission, in marking the 60th anniversary of the ruling, as we discuss how far we’ve come and take a look at where things are still falling short. There will be conversations on hurdles for rural public defense and innovations helping to address future challenges, as well as a featured interview with death row exoneree Anthony Graves.
The event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon March 17 at the Texas Capitol auditorium. You can register for the event here.
