Watch Auctioneer Ineichen Sets Five World Records For Works By Independent Watchmakers

As we head into the fall watch auction season in New York this week, collectors are keeping an eye on lots by independent watchmakers, whose limited-edition pieces are breaking records across the board. The star of the Phillips auction in Geneva last month, for example, was a Philippe Dufour Grande et Petite Sonnerie wristwatch No.1 in yellow gold that sold for $5,182,109, which represents a world record price for any Philippe Dufour and a world record amount paid for any watch by an independent maker. And Sotheby’s sold six F.P. Journes well above estimate at its Geneva auction in November. Even smaller auction houses are charting record sales for independent makers. Zurich auctioneer Ineichen set five world records at its November 21 sale of rare timepieces, including three for F.P. Journe pieces and two for Vianney Halter watches.

The twin Vianney Halter Antiqua perpetual calendars sold for a combined total $392,000 (the white gold model for $207,000 and the yellow gold for $185,000). The F.P. Journe pieces included a Souverain Tourbillon Ruthenium that sold for $425,000 against an estimate of $109,000-$218,000; the Vagabondage I, selling for $261,000 against an estimate of $54,000-$109,000; and Vagabondage II, selling for $245,000 also against a high estimate of $109,000. The previous record for the model was CHF $184,000 (2021, Sotheby’s).

Independent watchmakers Konstantin Chaykin, Urwerk and Daniel Roth also stood out in the Ineichen sale, hammering for well above high estimates. Chaykin’s Mouse King sold for $33,000. Urwerk’s 103-EW sold for $46,000 and Roth’s Perpetual Calendar Skeleton, went for $54,000 against an estimated value of $16,000. The two-day auction totaled just under $9-million. This coming week in New York is likely to see even more action in this growing horological niche, as all three of the major watch auction houses offer works by independents in upcoming sales. Sotheby’s Important Watches sale on December 9 includes pieces by Christophe Claret, Voutilainen and Parmigiani Fleurier. Christie’s is holding an online watch auction until December 10 entitled Important Timepieces and the Independent Collection, featuring works by F.P. Journe, Greubel Forsey, Franck Muller, MB&F and Christophe Claret. Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo is holding its New York Watch Auction December 11 and 12, including pieces by F.P. Journe, De Bethune, Laurent Ferrier, H. Moser & Cie and Richard Mille.
