Veteran forward Dillon Brooks, who recently signed with the Houston Rockets in 2023 free agency, has become one of the most controversial players in the NBA over the last few seasons.
But despite his occasional antics and questionable shot selection, Brooks is still widely regarded as one of the league’s best and toughest wing defenders — all while being an elite competitor.

That apparently made Brooks desirable to new head coach Ime Udoka, whose young and rebuilding Rockets were one of the NBA’s worst defensive teams last season. Houston’s hope is for the 27-year-old to bring a dose of grit and tenacity to a developing roster.
That toughness was on full display this weekend. At the Toronto Pro-Am summer league, Brooks heard chants of “overrated” from fans. He responded by scoring 28 points and leading his team to victory.

Brooks may soon hear more of that tough love around the NBA, especially now that he’s on an enviable contract paying him over $20 million annually over the next four seasons. But if this weekend’s summer-league action is any indication, he could use it as fuel.
A Canadian native, Brooks will soon report to training camp with Canada’s 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup roster. Those games will be played from late August through early September.
