WATCH: In Italy, One Of The World’s Most Active Volcanoes Is Erupting

On the Italian island of Stromboli, one of the world’s most active volcanoes has been erupting again.

The explosion caused glowing streams of lava to spew down the sides of the volcano, reaching the sea, accompanied by billowing clouds of thick, grey smoke.

On Sunday, a lava overflow “caused the collapse of a portion of the crater rim which gave rise to a pyroclastic flow,” according to Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology.

The Stromboli volcano, located off the coast of Sicily, has been erupting regularly since 1932. Its last serious eruption occurred in 1921.

Lava flows, like those currently occurring, are not very common. Stromboli’s activity tends to be exclusively explosive.
