Watch Lovers Rejoice: The Naked Watchmaker Unveils Master Classes

The watch market has been growing by leaps and bounds. In fact, the idea of learning about watches and collecting watches has never been as hot and in-vogue as it is now. That may be the result of people being couped up during the pandemic and looking to spend their money on tangible goods. It may be because would-be collectors had so much time on their hands that they started self-educating about watches online. It also could be the result of fortunes made in cryptocurrency or big celebrities wearing even bigger watches. No matter the cause, the  passion for watchmaking is on the rise.

Master watchmaker extraordinaire, Peter Speake (previously founder and owner of the eponymous Peter Speake Marin watch brand) and his now ex-wife Daniela Marin, co-founded The Naked Watchmaker website in 2017. The site is an educational tool wherein Peter takes apart certain watches and showcases their assembled and deconstructed forms on a watchmaker’s bench. This deconstruction of a watch is a horological dream for collectors and is a time-consuming project, but the site has been highly successful. 

Now, the Naked Watchmaker launches an exciting new educational tool on that site: Masterclass. The distance-learning watchmaking classes are geared for both novices and those who know all about timepieces. In fact, there are several different choices of classes that guide the individual from basics to advanced learning. The Masterclass even offers certificates for completion after the “pupil” finishes a few online quizzes course by course. 

The first course, which was released a couple of months ago in October, is called “Understanding watchmaking, the beginning of a journey.” That course is divided into six one-hour modules and focuses on the actual journey of watchmaking over the centuries.  It also takes a look at how a watch works and the key movement components of a watch. By the last modules, students are learning about simple complications and even minute repeaters and tourbillons. Students can pause the class at any time and return at will so they can work at their own pace. 

While, the foundation course is a starter, additional course are planned that will delve more deeply into the art of watchmaking and collecting.
