During the daunting fourth-innings chase of 444 runs, India made steady progress until a crucial moment occurred. Gill, while attempting to play a good-length ball from Scott Boland, pushed hard and the delivery found the edge of his bat. The towering Green, positioned at gully, dived low to his left and managed to take a remarkable one-handed catch.
Although Green seemed to have completed a clean catch, the on-field umpires decided to refer the decision to the TV umpire, Richard Kettleborough. Kettleborough spent several minutes examining multiple replays to ascertain whether the ball had brushed the turf after Green had grasped the catch. It is important to note that replays can sometimes distort angles and make such judgments challenging.
Ultimately, Kettleborough ruled in favor of Green, confirming that the catch was taken cleanly. However, this decision was met with chants of “Cheats!” from the India fans present at The Oval. Additionally, India’s captain and opener, Rohit Sharma, engaged in a discussion with the on-field officials regarding the decision.
Unfortunately for India, Gill was dismissed for 18 runs as a result of the catch being upheld. At tea on the fourth day, India’s score stood at 41-1 in their pursuit of the challenging target.
Meanwhile, the third umpire decision did not go well with the former Indian players and commentators as they came out in support of Gill.
