The incident took place in the 57th over of the Indian innings when Pujara looked to flick a tossed up delivery by Nathan Lyon. It got an inside edge and Smith made a dive low to his right and stuck his right hand out to get rid of Pujara with a stunner.
This was the 13th time that Lyon dismissed Pujara in Tests – the most an Indian batter has got out to a bowler.
After Pujara’s dismissal, India lost tail enders in quick succession to get bundled out for 163 in their second innings, leaving Australia needing 76 to win the third Test in Indore.
Lyon was the pick of the Australia bowlers, claiming 8-64.
India are 2-0 ahead in the four-Test series for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
