Wave for the green man: LTA trials ‘touchless buttons’ at 4 crossings starting this month

SINGAPORE: Instead of pushing a button to activate the green man, pedestrians at four signalised crossings will have to wave.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) on Sunday (Jul 3) said it is trialling “touchless buttons” at four locations around the island for six months.

The new buttons will be progressively installed this month at Jalan Besar near Syed Alwi Road, Tampines Street 86 near Block 879A, Bukit Batok Street 32 near St Anthony’s Primary School and Yishun Street 21 near Block 219.

Minimising physical contact at signalised crossings will “reduce wear and tear on our infrastructure”, said LTA in a Facebook post announcing the trial.

The post included a 12-second video demonstrating how the sensor works. The new buttons do not change the waiting or crossing times, LTA said.

It also asked members of the public for feedback on the buttons, and whether they might work “just as well or better than conventional ones”.
