Wayne Rooney clearly thinks highly of Manchester United’s new transfer target after including him in the MLS All-Star squad. The former Red Devils captain will take charge of the best talent America’s top league has to offer when they face Arsenal, and one inclusion has Old Trafford fans excited.
Rooney, the head coach of DC United, is the latest manager to be tasked with leading the MLS All-Stars. The team will take on Premier League giants Arsenal in an exhibition game taking place on July 19 at the Audi Field.
The team is made up of 24 players, 12 players are chosen by fans and the media with two selected by MLS commissioner Don Garber. The remaining 12 are chosen by Rooney.
Among the stars named by the Man United legend is New England Revolution goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic. The Serbian shot-stopper comes highly rated and has an impressive record of six clean sheets in 17 games in the MLS so far this season, and has only conceded 21 goals.
Petrovic has also made the headlines in recent weeks after strong links to join United and replace the club’s veteran goalkeeper David de Gea. The 32-year-old has reached the end of his contract with United and could move on following over a decade at the club.
De Gea was brought in to replace Edwin van Der Sar in 2011 and has enjoyed great success. The Spaniard has won the Premier League in 2013 to go alongside three Community Shields, an FA Cup, two League Cups and the UEFA Europa League.
In recent seasons the shot-stopper has suffered a turbulent run of form which has led to a number of high-profile mistakes. As one of United’s highest earners the club could see De Gea move on, and they already have eyes on a suitable replacement.
At 23 years old Petrovic is young enough to improve and arguably has his best years ahead of him. One man who has seen his talent up close is ex-United legend and current MLS coach Rooney.
Speaking to reporters last May, current USMNT No 1 Matt Turner was full of praise for the Serbian goalkeeper. “What I’ve seen from him is that he’s really talented, he said.
“He’s way more talented than I was at his age, you know? He’s taller than me. He’s athletic.”
“But you know, he’s got things that he’s going to have to work on if he wants to be a consistent player for this team, as we all do. So, I think that for him, [if] he works on a few small details in his game, he’s going to be a really good player for this organisation.”
