Just like when you’re buying a new bedsheets, you want to think about what kind of sleeper you are and what time of year you’ll be using your new comforter. A few things to keep in mind as ya shop:
Find the right weight
Down alternative comforters can vary in heaviness, and some brands even offer comforters in a variety of different densities. As a rule of thumb, lightweight comforters are best for the summer, hot climates, or hot sleepers. Medium or all-season comforters are meant to be used at any time of the year. There are also heavy or plush comforters that add extra warmth during the winter or for those who sleep cool.
Choose the right material
As well as weight, both the fill material and shell material of your comforter make all the difference in terms of comfort and feel. You wanna prioritize materials that are breathable, lightweight, and durable, though it’s up to you to decide whether you prefer to your comforter to feel silky and smooth or crisp and cool. Likewise, microfiber fills tend to be a lil more lightweight, while PrimaLoft and wool are better for those who want something more substantial.
Be mindful of the outer fabric
Down alternative comforters usually have outer fabrics made of cotton or polyester. If you want something super soft and crisp and are willing to drop a lil extra $$$, go for cotton. But if you want that same feeling (maybe not as luxurious though) without the expensive price tag, opt for polyester.
Look at the construction
The way it’s constructed determines how the fill will stay distributed in the cover. The two most popular ones are box-stitching and baffle-box construction. Box stitching is popular and it’s sewn/quilted in a defined square pattern. Baffle-box is similar as it does have the stitched square design, but each square/pocket is filled with a uniform amount of down and has fabric walls that trap air—which results in a fluffier feel.
See if it has corner loops
Depending on your bedding situation, you may want to invest in one that has built-in corner loops. It’ll be especially easier and more convenient if you have a duvet cover that you want to attach it to. But if you don’t mind, you can always look into duvet clips which will also do the same job.
Check out the care instructions
Down alternative comforters can either be machine washable or dry clean only, but if you’re not looking to make any trips to the laundromat, then you should prioritize a low-maintenance, washer-friendly comforter.
