WHEN my new husband and I were planning a trip to celebrate finally getting wed — we’d been engaged for eight years — we were only looking at one place… Lake Windermere.
We’re big fans of the area, visiting at least once a year with Autumn being our favourite season to appreciate the water and surrounding landscapes.
So it seemed the perfect place to start married life together after all the stresses of wedding planning.
And The Beech Hill Hotel and Spa had everything we were looking for, and so much more, including the most amazing views over the lake.
When Gordon and I arrived we were delighted to discover we had been upgraded to the newly-opened Windermere Suite. What a treat!
The luxurious accommodation is one of the highlights at Beech Hill and we felt very privileged to be among the first to try it out.
The entire suite is designed to make the most of the spectacular views with large bi-fold doors opening out onto private decking complete with sun loungers and a top of the range hot tub.
The huge rooms were bright and airy complete with super king-size bed, separate seating area, walk-in double shower and roll top bath. We had to pinch ourselves. We’d discovered our own corner of paradise!
There was no way we were venturing away from the luxury of the hotel any time soon, so booked into the hotel restaurant Burlingtons for our evening meal.
The décor and menu are both exquisite and the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly.
After much indecision Gordon chose the sea trout pate to start and we both had the fillet steak with chunky chips for our main course — it was our honeymoon after all!
We followed up with a baileys and toffee cheesecake for me and sticky toffee pudding for Gordon, having tasted them both I can say that they were both fantastic – anyway what’s his is mine now, right!
After dinner we headed for the bar to sample the extensive wine list and enjoy a relaxed evening in front of the roaring log fire.
The selection of board games was a nice touch and added to the real sense of family fun that Beech Hill has got just right. In fact, we overheard a large family party saying that they have been gathering at the hotel every year for 20 years, it’s easy to see why.
Next morning we woke to a crisp autumnal day and, after a hearty breakfast, took a 10-minute drive through to Bowness-on-Windermere, a small but bustling town which, although has become a honeypot for tourists, has not lost its charm.
Visitors are well served with a variety of shops, cafes and restaurants and it’s a beautiful town to wander around and enjoy.
GO: LAKE WINDERMERE
Rooms at the 4H Beech Hil Hotel & Spa start from £103 a night, B&B to £565 a night for the Windermere Suite, B&B. Two course dinner is from £34.95pp. See beechhillhotel.co.uk or call 0333 444 6835.
Bowness-on-Windermere is also home to the World of Beatrix Potter Museum which celebrates the English author and illustrator and her most famous character Peter Rabbit.
Kids, big and small, adore it.
You can also take one of many boat cruises to explore Lake Windermere but we wanted to be in the water not on it and headed back to the hotel’s Lakeview Spa for a swim and sauna.
We made full use of the heated pool, Himalayan sauna and aromatic steam room. As it was a beautiful sunny Autumn day, we ventured onto the outdoor terrace and vitality pools overlooking the lake — a blissful way to spend the afternoon.
Just when we felt that life couldn’t get any better, it was time for the total relaxation treatments which we had booked.
Any stresses still lingering from the wedding melted away with a 90-minute treatment which included a full body massage and facial.
Beech Hill Hotel and Spa had everything we were looking for — luxurious accommodation, fantastic food, relaxing spa and of course wonderful views.
We’re already planning our first anniversary return visit!
