AN AMERICAN tourist has been left fuming after she booked a meal at an Edinburgh restaurant – only to find it has shut down by the time they arrived.
Michaele DeHart booked the table for a group of 30 people to celebrate her son’s wedding at No.1 The Grange.
Michaele told Edinburgh Live how she coughed up £250 for a deposit MONTHS in advance.
She told how she received emails from the restaurant boss confirming the booking but she then stopped hearing back and saw their Facebook page has been removed.
Her son, a student at Edinburgh Uni, stopped by the restaurant on June 18 after the family heard nothing back from them just DAYS before their relatives were due to arrive.
When he arrived, the restaurant was closed and had the front door padlocked shut and was told by a passer-by it had been shut for ‘weeks’.
When the family arrived in the city, they went to the restaurant to see for themselves.
Michaele told Edinburgh Live: “I have emails confirming the booking from the former manager, but he all of a sudden stopped replying and their Facebook page was removed.
“Once it had been put back up, I responded to their latest post and asked what was happening regarding our booking.
“He then reached out to say he was no longer in the business, but he would sort it out with the new owners.”
On July 11, Michaele was told her deposit would be refunded by the end of the week. But claims she has yet to get her money back two weeks later.
The former manager of the restaurant told Edinburgh Live: “The customer was made aware of this in sufficient time to re book elsewhere.
“The customer in question has been contacted and the deposit has been scheduled for payment back to the customer.
“As you can probably imagine tying up the operations from a business can be a long process hence the delay.”
The family ended up dining at another venue to celebrate the occasion.
Michaele claimed to have not had any more contact with the manager.
She said: “If there was a reason for not paying, I would rather he said. It’s not really about the money any more, it’s about the integrity.”
She added: “We may have to chalk this one off as a lesson learned.”
