Legendary parodist “Weird Al” Yankovic is celebrating after getting nominated for an Emmy for the first time. On Wednesday, the full list of nominations was revealed for the Primetime Emmy Awards, and there were a total of eight announced for WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story. A parody biopic film that premiered on The Roku Channel last year, WEIRD is considered a TV movie, and as such, it’s been nominated for Outstanding Television Movie. The film will be up against Dolly Parton’s Mountain Magic Christmas, Fire Island, Hocus Pocus 2, and Prey.
Yankovic himself is up for two awards, as he was nominated for the category Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics. Specifically, he was nominated for the song “Now You Know.” Alongside co-writer Eric Appel, the “Eat It” singer was also nominated for the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. Meanwhile, the person who portrays Yankovic in the film, Daniel Radcliffe, has been nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.
There were a total of eight nominations for the acclaimed comedy. Along with the above, other nominations include Wendy O’Brien for Outstanding Casting for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie; Jamie Kennedy for Outstanding Picture Editing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie; Leo Birenberg and Zach Robinson for Outstanding Music Composition for a Limited or Antholosy Series, Movie or Special; and Tony Solis, Richard Bulloock, Brian Magnum, and Phil McGowasn for Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.
A Parody Biopic Scores “Weird Al” Yankovic His First Emmy Noms
In a tweet reacting to the news, “Weird Al” Yankovic wrote, “Sorry for screaming at the top of my lungs, but WEIRD: THE AL YANKOVIC STORY JUST GOT EIGHT EMMY NOMINATIONS!!!!”
“Congratulations to promising young newcomer Daniel Radcliffe, who just got his very first Emmy nomination!” adds the “Weird” one in a follow-up tweet.
The film is a spoof of musician biopics like Bohemian Rhapsody and Elvis. Yankovic recently spoke about how he was inspired to pursue the film from his recent frustrations over how biopics take too many creative liberties. That has Yankovic and co-writer Eric Appel making Yankovic’s backstory as outlandish and far away from the truth as possible, which includes an affair that never really happened with Madonna (Evan Rachel Wood). While not presented in a realistic manner, the love affair in the film did lead to many people Googling to see if there was any truth to that, which flattered Yankovic.
“It brought me so much joy to see that was the number one Google search, ‘Did Weird Al and Madonna have a fling?’ or whatever,” the parodist told Variety. “I don’t know if Madonna is even aware of this movie. I’m very curious what she thinks… I hope she’s OK with it.”
