Moyes hails Lyon tamers as West Ham’s European adventure continues

West Ham United reached a major milestone on Thursday after reaching the semi-final of the Europa League following a 3-0 victory over Lyon, but they must now turn their attention back to their top four chase with the visit of Burnley on Sunday.

The Clarets are four points adrift of safety heading into the weekend and sacked manager Sean Dyche on Friday, following a poor run of form in which they have lost four of their last five fixtures.

A victory for the Hammers will keep them within touching distance of Tottenham in fourth spot, while Burnley can ensure the gap between them and Everton decreases with a victory.

When is West Ham vs Burnley?

West Ham vs Burnley will kick-off at 2:15pm on Sunday, April 17 at the London Stadium.

The last meeting between these two sides came in the reverse fixture back in December, when the Hammers were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw at Turf Moor.

Despite dominating the majority of the match, the visitors couldn’t find a way through Burnley’s stubborn defence but a draw meant they remained in the Premier League ’s top four.

Team news

The hosts will be on a high following Thursday’s impressive 3-0 victory over Lyon in the Europa League quarter-finals but David Moyes is expected to make one or two changes to that winning side in order to keep things fresh as they go in search of three points.

And the Hammers will have a relatively fully fit squad to choose from for this fixture, but Kurt Zouma (ankle) is expected to miss out once again here following his absence in midweek, while long-term absentee Angelo Ogbonna (knee) is the only other injury concern.

As for the visitors, it remains to be seen as to how much things might be changed following Sean Dyche’s sacking on Friday, although a side too dissimilar to the one that lost to Norwich is not to be expected.

Nonetheless, the Clarets could be set to welcome back Erik Pieters from his long-term knee injury, but captain Ben Mee (calf) and midfielder Johann Berg Gudmundsson (calf) continue to be ruled out.
