Everton, who have never been relegated from the Premier League, start this afternoon’s final round of fixtures outside of the drop zone – two points ahead of their relegation rivals.
And so with nerves set to be shredded by all involved, let’s look at what Everton, Leeds and Leicester need to do to avoid the Premier League trapdoor with the all-important relegation permutations.
Premier League relegation permutations
Everton are the only team heading into the final day with Premier League safety in their hands.
Sean Dyche’s men know that victory over Bournemouth at Goodison Park will be enough to keep them in the top flight, regardless of what Leeds and Leicester do.
Everton will also stay up if Leeds don’t beat Tottenham and Leicester fail to beat West Ham.
Leeds need to beat Spurs at Elland Road to have any chance of staying up, but they will almost certainly still be relegated if Leicester win, owing to the Foxes’ superior goal difference.
Leicester need a win at home to West Ham to avoid relegation and for Everton to not beat Bournemouth, whilst hoping Leeds don’t overturn their nine-goal advantage on goal difference.
If Leicester don’t win, goal difference could prove critical between Everton and Leeds.
In the event Everton draw and Leeds win both teams would finish the season on 34 points.
With Leeds’ goal difference currently at -27 and Everton’s at -24, a Leeds win by three goals or more would see them finish ahead of the Toffees by virtue of goals scored.
