However, the 60 year-old walked away from the Puskas Arena empty handed as his side were beaten 4-1 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra-time.
The defeat was the first time in Mourinho’s career that he had lost a major European final.
But exactly how many finals has Mourinho won during his spell in the game?
Let’s take a look at his updated record following the agonising loss to the undisputed Europa League Kings.
What is Jose Mourinho’s record in finals?
Mourinho has won 18 of the 22 finals he has contested as a manager.
This gives the Portuguese icon a hugely impressive 82% win record in major finals.
After winning the first 13 finals of his career, Mourinho’s first defeat in a showpiece arrived in the UEFA Super Cup with Chelsea in 2013.
Bayern Munich scored in the final minute of extra-time to send the match to penalties, which the Bavarians won 5-4 after Romelu Lukaku missed his spotkick for the Blues.
The UEFA Super Cup was the scene once again for Mourinho’s second defeat in a final in 2017.
His Manchester United team, who qualified having triumphed in the Europa League the previous season, were beaten 2-1 by Real Madrid in North Macedonia.
Chelsea inflicted the third loss of Mourinho’s career when he took charge of Manchester United in the FA Cup final in 2018.
A first half penalty from Eden Hazard was enough to separate the two sides at Wembley.

What is Jose Mourinho’s record in European finals?
Following the defeat to Sevilla, Mourinho has won five of the six European finals he has managed in.
He won the Champions League with Porto in 2004 before repeating the trick with Inter Milan in 2010.
Along with the Europa League triumph with United, Mourinho also won the Europa League when it was branded as the UEFA Cup in 2003 with Porto.
His fifth title on the continental stage saw him clinch the Europa Conference League with Roma last season.
Before Sevilla equalised in Budapest, it had been twenty years since a Mourinho side conceded a goal in a European final, with Henrik Larsson netting twice for Celtic in that UEFA Cup clash against Porto.
Mourinho is the only manager to have won all three of UEFA’s major club competitions.
