Popped, and locked in
Saturday. Like just about every other trend from the 1980s, it seems, break dancing is back – and poised to have a big moment when the sport of “breaking” debuts at the summer 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. In the meantime, b-boys and b-girls around the world are honing their skills at competitions like the one scheduled for 1 p.m. today in Denver’s Globeville neighborhood.
The Red Bull BC One City Cypher (yes, that’s a mouthful), a one-on-one breaking battle, takes place at BirdSeed Collective, 4496 Grant St. Breakers of all levels (and over the age of 16) can enter and compete for a chance to advance to a regional competition in August in New York. Oldies and cold ones
Saturday. Twice a year, vinyl lovers get together in Denver for the Rocky Mountain Record Show, an extravaganza featuring more than 50 vendors selling tens of thousands of records. But for the first time, RMRS will hold an additional pop-up event, where you can 15-20 of Denver’s best record slingers, listen to tunes and sip on some terrific beer.
The Rocky Mountain Record Show Pop-Up, which is free to attend, runs from 2 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 3, at Great Divide Brewing’s Barrel Bar location, at 1812 35th St. “Spend the afternoon digging and sipping your way to an enviable media collection while you listen to beats from live vinyl DJs. A food truck will be on-site,” Great Divide said.
Streets style
Sunday. Combine an old tradition with a new one when the Taste of Colorado festival at Civic Center Park, 14th and Bannock streets, teams up with ¡Viva! Streets, a new event this summer that closes down a portion of Broadway and Welton Street to cars and trucks so that people can walk, bike, skate or scooter their way through the typically busy city.
Taste of Colorado, in its new format, runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and includes eight food stalls, live music all day, more than 20 vendors in a marketplace, and a kids zone with face painting, bike helmet decorating, games and more. Streets, meanwhile, is from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and takes place on Broadway, between Alameda Avenue and 20th Street, and on Welton, between 20th and 28th streets. Park it right here
Sunday. The Mile High City’s biggest picnic party returns when City Park Jazz kicks off its 10-week season with music from Sarah Mount and the Rushmores, a funk and neo-soul band. And while the music is always fantastic, City Park Jazz is much more than that.
Thousands of people typically convene on both sides of the bandstand (near 17th Avenue and Milwaukee Street), toting bikes, dogs, kids, picnics, barbecues, games like bocce and cornhole, camp chairs and coolers. There are usually food trucks on hand as well. The music is from 6 to 8 p.m., although people show up much earlier. (This week, City Park is going up against Game 2 of the NBA Finals, which is at the same time, though.) City Park Jazz is every Sunday through Aug. 6. Go to cityparkjazz.org for more information.
