FX has dropped the official trailer for season five of What We Do in the Shadows. When season four concluded, audiences were left wondering if Guillermo de la Cruz (Harvey Guillén) would finally achieve his dream of becoming a vampire. According to the trailer, the answer is a solid “maybe.” While the trailer hints at Guillermo finally getting his wish, his transformation seems peculiar and long, as he mentions it takes 60 days. So what is the rest of the crew up to? Energy vampire Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) is running for office (yawn), while Guillermo and Laszlo Cravensworth (Matt Berry) continue to grow their friendship, Nandor the Relentless (Kayvan Novak) visits the mall, and a sometimes blonde Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) is back. You can watch what the Staten Island vampires will be up to in season five below.
According to the show’s official season five synopsis, “Nandor feels his familiar (and sometimes friend) Guillermo slipping away as he seems to be spending much more time with Laszlo. Nadja, suffering the effects of a previously-undiagnosed supernatural hex, reconnects with her family — or at least, a family — from the Old Country. Colin pursues the path of so many energy vampires before him by running for political office and The Guide tries to figure out where she fits in as the relative newcomer to this tightly-knit group.”
What We Do in the Shadows is based on Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi’s 2014 film of the same name; the two also serve as executive producers on the series with Paul Simms, Sam Johnson, Garrett Basch and Eli Bush. The horror comedy series, shot mockumentary style, premiered on FX in 2019. Through its run, it has amassed critical praise and 17 Emmy Award nominations, including two nods for Outstanding Comedy Series (in 2020 and 2022). Last year, before the release of its fourth season, What We Do in the Shadows was renewed for seasons 5 and 6.
Season 5 returns with Novak, Berry, Demetriou, Proksch, Guillén, and Kristen Schaal as The Guide.
Will Guillermo Finally Get His Wish?
Since the show’s commencement, hard-working Guillermo has yearned for an immortal life. As the familiar of Nandor the Relentless for over a decade, Guillermo has tended to the needs of his Master. Guillermo is underappreciated by Nandor, who never seems to come around to making Guillermo’s wish a reality. This doesn’t dissuade Guillermo, as he continues to go above and beyond for Nandor.
Things took a turn for a bit when Guillermo discovered details surrounding his lineage: he is a descendant of famous vampire slayer Van Helsing. Just like his ancestor, Guillermo proves to be a competent vampire slayer. Guillermo, still hoping to become a vampire, though, eventually takes his newfound skills back to the vampires, and becomes a bodyguard for Nandor, Nadja, and Laszlo.
As time progresses, the reality of becoming a vampire seems to slip further away, and a desperate Guillermo turns to his vampire friend Derek for a solution. So did Derek succeed in transforming Guillermo into a bloodsucker? Guess we’ll have to wait and see. Season five premieres with two episodes on July 13 on FX, and available to stream on Hulu.
