What’s the big, hairy deal that women aren’t shaving their legs like they used to?

For many, two years of pandemic lockdown has changed the trajectory of their lives forever.

During the worst of the lockdown, everyday lifestyle habits got tossed to the curb, and we all learned to work from home, make bread, adopt pets and trade smart casual attire for comfortable sweats, even loungewear.

And many of us stopped shaving our legs and underarms. I certainly did – for months on end.

Here’s the thing – it didn’t bother me one bit. I suspect it hasn’t bothered many others, either – what was the point? The whole world was in a crisis and a little body hair wasn’t high up on the priority scale when you had thousands across the globe on ventilators.

Besides, we were all safely ensconced in our respective abodes, not seeing anyone. And if you did, you were normally nicely covered up.

So, much like how lipstick sales took a nosedive during the worst of the pandemic because no one could see those lovely, luscious lips behind the obligatory masks – so did women’s shaving habits. We embraced the hair. We owned it.

All this came to me recently while I patiently waited for a red light to turn at a traffic stop, and I casually observed the young woman walking in front of my car. She looked nice in sporty shorts and top.

And she had the hairiest legs I’ve ever seen.

You go, girl! Now, before you think I’m being judgmental on antiquated arbitrary beauty standards that women should aspire to, do keep in mind, I’m just making an observation. And – wow! to be honest, this woman’s legs were hairy on an Olympian level. It also dawned on me that, hmm, I, too, still haven’t shaved my legs for a while (well, above the knee – below, there’s been some shaving going on recently, given that the warm weather has arrived.)

I really don’t care if a woman shaves her legs – and her underarms – or not. I do believe, having visited often, that Europeans have a different take on body hair. I do know Madonna’s daughter Lourdes Leon has been proudly showing off her hairy pits for years – much like her famous mom. Leon even attended a Met Gala in a beautiful fuchsia Moschino number, gaily waving her arms around.

Julia Roberts started a global maelstrom when she appeared on some red carpet to promote her film, Notting Hill. She was beautifully dressed – and sporting some seriously hairy pits. People were breaking out the smelling salts.

There are others who have publicly embraced their hairiness – famous celebrities like actress Mo’Nique who once revealed her full-on fuzzy legs at the movie premiere of Precious, declaring herself “a hairy woman,” as reported by bustle.com. Actress Amanda Palmer, also a non-shaver who has famously challenged the feminine ideas of beauty standards, “stood in razor-free solidarity with Mo’Nique after the actress received some media backlash for her legs,” reported Bustle.

There’s no shame in hairy body parts. Take armpits – today, many are embracing their inner curls and turning their pits into works of art. Dyed armpits are indeed becoming a trend, thanks to celebrities like Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus, who have rocked multi-hued hairy underarms because, well – they just can.

(On the other end of the spectrum, you have the whole Kardashian clan who have taken hair removal to new levels by utilizing a special laser device. They’ve removed hair where the sun doesn’t shine, but I digress.)

Nope, women’s hairy pits and legs do not bother me. I’m just fascinated by this…new, screw-you pandemic trend, shall we say? I’m also wondering if other women feel the same way, and are going au naturel, post-pandemic.

Consider that for decades (perhaps a century) any type of hair on a woman’s body, except for her head, was quietly disposed of through a variety of methods – shaver, electric or otherwise, waxing, threading, depilatory creams – but you just know a multi-billion dollar hair removal industry had taken a direct hit during the worst of the pandemic.

And, much like many people who have made major lifestyle changes post-pandemic, I’m pretty sure hairy legs are right up there with women allowing their natural grey to show, along with taking control of their bodies and their lives.

We apologize, but this video has failed to load.

When asked about her own shaving habits, Big Bang Theory star, actress Mayim Bialik, an a ardent feminist, reported on Kveller.com that she had never, ever shaved her legs. She then asked, “If we never told girls to shave, would they? If we modelled a cultural acceptance of our body hair, would they spontaneously feel the need to remove it weekly, monthly, or daily?”

Shaving legs, dying hair, wearing or not wearing make-up – are basically things we can control.

Can you imagine if the government had stepped in during the worst of the pandemic and said – along with the famous safe-distancing-masking-stay-home-stay-safe mantra – “Oh! And don’t forget to shave your legs.”

Now that would have become one big, ugly, hairy deal.
