Q: What are they doing with night work on Interstate 680 in Danville? Signs on northbound on-ramps at Diablo Road, El Cerro Road and El Pintado Road write about closures from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. from April 25 to June 25. Unfortunately, some nights, I have been awakened by jackhammers and blower noise.
I’ve inquired with Caltrans and CHP to no avail, and cannot find any mention of this on the Caltrans website.
Thomas Miller
A: Several things are occurring in this area. Caltrans is closing the right-most lane of southbound Interstate 680 at various locations and times between Alcosta Boulevard in San Ramon and Highway 84 in Sunol for tree removal from June 12 through late August. Most closures are scheduled between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.
Closures are necessary for workers to safely remove trees and vegetation ahead of construction of the southbound 680 express lane and pavement rehabilitation project.
That project will build a new express lane on southbound 680, stretching from Highway 84 to Alcosta Boulevard in San Ramon. The express lane will close the gap between current and in-process express lanes and will rehabilitate the pavement.
Q: My California driver’s license comes up for renewal soon. Can you clarify current procedures for senior drivers?
According to the DMV website, as of 2023, anyone 70 or older must go to a local DMV office and take a written and vision test.
Do you know if appointments are required, how much it costs, and how far in advance this process can be started? I didn’t find information about road testing requirements or how long renewals are good for. Can you please enlighten us mature drivers?
Elaine Elliott
A: Drivers who will be 70 or older with their next renewal can renew their California driver’s license for five years. You must go to a DMV office for a written and vision test. You can begin the renewal process online up to three months before your license expires.
An appointment is not required, but is advised.
Bring your current driver’s license and renewal notice to your appointment. Your notice will show your renewal fee.
If you have moved since your last renewal, let the DMV know. You won’t receive your renewal notice if the DMV does not have your current address.
Review the California Driver’s Handbook prior to taking the knowledge test. You can find it on the DMV’s website. You may also want to take a sample knowledge test.
Most seniors who are renewing their driver’s license do not need to take a driving test, but the DMV may ask you to do so. If this happens, it might be because:
- You do not meet minimum vision requirements
- You were referred from a Driver Safety office because of a medical condition or your driving skills need improvement.
