We recently wrote about five places to observe 2023’s wildflower season, which due to torrential rains and previous wildfires, could be the best in the Bay Area (and possibly the entire state) in 20 years. Readers had opinions about their own favorite spots to enjoy the ongoing blooms – so without ado, here are five of them:
“No way I’m telling you about my favorite wildflower spot in Sunol off of Welch Creek Road up Eagle View Trail to the bench at the lookout under the big oak tree. Do you think I want dozens of people out there enjoying the quiet, only broken by the ruffling of feathers of passing raptors? Or hikers smashing wildflowers that have burst forward after waiting for the rains to give them new life?” – Jim
“Back entrance to Santa Teresa (County Park in San Jose) from Fortini Road and Edgewood (Park and Natural Preserve near Redwood City). Love those fetid adder’s tongues.” – Iris
“Hidden Villa in Los Altos Hills is ablaze with trilliums and a palette of colors and textures from streams to hilltops. Spectacular!” – Andrea
“The drive starting at Dalton Avenue in Livermore, over Dagnino Road, May School Road, Manning and Highland roads, all the way to Danville is spectacular right now! I believe the area is called Morgan Territory but it might also be part of Tassajara Valley. The mustard weed is growing in mass profusion and the color combination of vibrant green from the grasses and the brilliant gold of the mustard is not to be missed!” – Marilyn
“Native California wildflowers: Rancho Canada del Oro Open Space Preserve (Santa Clara County), Edgewood County Park (San Mateo County). Non-native, beautiful spring flowers: Lovers Point (Pacific Grove).” – Joan
