After an unexciting July Community Day, Niantic has upped the ante in August with Galarian Zigzagoon starring in its own celebration in “Pokemon Go.” This Community Day, running from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 13, won’t be as big as Deino Day in June, but it ticks a couple of boxes on the desirability list.
First off, Galarian Zigzagoon’s shiny variant is one of the best-looking ones in the game. The color scheme stands out with its punk-rock red and blue, and that carries over to the rest of the family. Although it was released months ago, the shiny version has been rare enough that many people don’t have it.
The appeal is not just about looks though. The second reason to grab the Galarian Zigzagoon is that its final evolution, Obstagoon, is a useful pick in Go Battle League. It’s decent in Great League, but it shines in Ultra. That makes it a bit of a rarity among Community Day Pokemon.
Best of all, Obstagoon will get the exclusive move, Obstruct, which is 15 power but also guarantees to increase the user’s defense and lower the opponent’s defense. That gives the Pokemon potential even if Obstruct is a bit pricier than some hoped. As it is, the Pokemon is already a staple in the Ultra League meta, and it will be worth evolving a few by the 7 p.m. deadline.
PLENTY OF BONUSES
If that doesn’t persuade trainers to go hard for August Pokemon Go Community Day, the bonuses and rewards should pique players’ interests. The event features triple catch stardust, double catch candy, double the chance for trainers level 31 and higher to receive XL Candy from catches.
Fortunately because of the Global Challenge completion for Pokemon Go Fest 2022 in Japan, additional bonuses were unlocked. Players will also receive double catch XP, double candy for transfers and up to four special trades for the day. Trades will also require 75% less Stardust.
All of those bonuses together are rarely seen outside of major celebrations. But Niantic also said, wait there’s more! The event also has a Timed Research, in which players have the chance to earn a whole Obstagoon outfit featuring a hat, glasses, gloves and pose for free. Players have to complete the quest by catching a total of 100 Galarian Zigzagoon from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
That shouldn’t be too hard given that players also have the opportunity to extend Community Day-type spawns by tackling Four-Star Raid Battles against Galarian Linoone. By winning the raid, it changes spawns around a 300-meter radius of the gym into Galarian Zigzagoon with the same Community Day shiny rates. These raids appear after the event is over at 2 p.m. and last until 7 p.m.
With that in mind, the two best places to attend Pokemon Go Community Day will be at Pier 39 in San Francisco and Jack London Square. These two areas will have Niantic Hosted Meetups with giveaways and more importantly special temporary Pokestops that create a high density for spawns.
That means these areas will be overflowing Galarian Zigzagoon and players will have more chances to catch a shiny one with ideal stats for Go Battle League. (A rank 1 is 0 attack, 15 defense and 13 stamina.) The event will also draw big crowds and that means players will likely activate group bonuses, which is quadruple stardust for 30 minutes if enough players catch the prerequisite Pokemon from a single lure.
It’s better than the disaster that was Zweilous during Deino Pokemon Go Day.
