As director Kathryn Ferguson told The Guardian, she sought to highlight just how brave O’Connor was in her activism. “It wasn’t cool, on-trend activism,” Ferguson said. “A lot of it was very unpalatable. The sexual abuse scandal in the Catholic church? Jeez Louise, it’s not something people wanted, or were ready, to hear.”
Ultimately, Nothing Compares is what Ferguson calls a “love letter.” “It was made over many, many years,” she said on BBC Radio 4’s Front Row. “And made because of the impact she had made on me as a young girl growing up in Ireland.”
