There’s been much to work out in the wake of Queen Elizabeth’s death on September 8, from who will get which titles to where royals who were bumped up on the line of succession are going to live. Yes, Camilla is officially the Queen Consort. Yes, Kate Middleton is officially the first Princess of Wales since Princess Diana. No, Will and Kate are not immediately planning to move to Windsor Castle.
But perhaps one of the more important questions revolves around Queen Elizabeth’s three remaining corgis: Muik, Sandy, and a dorgi (corgi and dachshund mix) named Candy. While the queen has owned over 30 corgis throughout her life, she reportedly planned to stop breeding the dogs after her dog Whisper died in 2018. However, following the death of her husband, Prince Phillip, in 2021, she was gifted three corgis by her son, Prince Andrew.
Immediately following the queen’s passing, it was unclear who would take on the responsibility of the pups, as royals expert Victoria Arbiter told The Independent that while “the royal family is a family of dog lovers,” none of them are “particularly fond of corgis.” (Ouch.)
Well, now we know the fate of the queen’s loyal companions. On September 11, it was revealed that Andrew, who was stripped of his military titles due to sexual abuse allegations and his connections to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, will take possession of the dogs with his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York.
“The corgis will return to live at Royal Lodge with The Duke and Duchess. It was The Duchess who found the puppies which were gifted to Her Majesty by The Duke,” a source told Harper’s Bazaar. “The Duchess bonded with Her Majesty over dog walking and riding horses, and even after her divorce, she would continue her great friendship with Her Majesty by walking the dogs in Frogmore and chatting.”
Though Andrew and Fergie divorced in 1996, they continue to live together at the Royal Lodge in Windsor.
