White Christmas: An elusive brew worth hunting around for

Our resident beer writer (best job in the world, right?!) has sipped his way through everything from Emu Export to Barrel-Aged Imperial Porters.

Trying out this week’s sip, Simon Collins gives his verdict on the Tinnie of the Week and whether it’s worth cracking one with a mate.

WHERE’S IT FROM?

I’m dreaming of a white Christmas ale, just like the one I sipped the other day.

Snowglobe is a fun, limited release from prolific Melbourne brewery Dainton, which also wrapped up a Christmas pudding stout for good beer-loving boys and girls this year.

WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT IT?

Please don’t shake this Snowglobe, simply pour the golden yet creamy-looking liquid into your favourite festive glassware and enjoy what is basically a lovely, big hazy IPA loaded with tropical notes and slight citrus tang.

Sitting at 6 per cent ABV and a moderate 25 IBU, this beer doesn’t shake things up, which is something of a surprise given Dainton’s penchant for the occasional stunt beer.

Yes, I’m talking about their chocolate pretzel stout, salt and pepper squid ink gose and an IPA inspired by the beloved Viennetta dessert, among other attempts to push the brewing envelope.

By comparison, this is straight down the middle, to quote Bing Crosby, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

SHOULD I SHARE IT?

Maybe. They say it’s better to give than receive, but I’m not sure that rule holds up when it comes to tasty beer.

WHAT’S THE DAMAGE?

Snowglobe might a little tough to track down but if you do spot this elusive elf on a bottle shop shelf, it’ll only set you back around $7 for a single 355ml tin and $23 for a four-pack. That’s pretty good value.

RATING?

Four tins out of 5. May your days be merry and bright, and may all your Christmas ales be white.
