Reports have already indicated a shortlist of five personnel is in the reckoning for the women’s team coaching post. Among the quintet, former Mumbai player Amol Muzumdar is said to be leading the race.
Who is Amol Muzumdar?
Amol Muzumdar is a domestic cricket stalwart, who has played most of his career for Mumbai in Ranji Trophy. The former player has scored 11,167 runs in 171 first-class games, at an average of 48 with 30 centuries to his name.
In List A cricket, the player has scored 3,286 runs and also has 174 runs in domestic T20 tournaments.
Despite having such a rich domestic career, Muzumdar was never considered for the Indian senior team and he never played a solitary match for India.
Amol Muzumdar is also the highest-ever runscorer for Mumbai in domestic cricket.
Amol Muzumdar Coaching History
Amol Muzumdar has been into coaching for a long time. In his final season as a player while playing for Andhra Pradesh in 2013, Muzumdar made himself unavailable for the final part of the season and worked as a mentor for the youngsters.
He has played his part as the batting coach for the India u-19 team and India u-23 teams. He was with Rajasthan Royals for three seasons (2018 to 2020) as coach and most recently has been the head coach for Mumbai.
The former Mumbai player also has international experience. Muzumdar worked as a batting consultant for the Netherlands cricket team back in 2013, while he was also appointed as South Africa’s batting consultant when the Proteas toured India a few years back.
Muzumdar has an offer of head coach role for Saurashtra for the upcoming domestic season. But the player is yet to take any decision on that amid the India selection.
