Joann Van der Henrick is making major waves in the modelling industry – and with Gigi and Bella Hadid as cousins, it’s clear that fashion is in her genes.
What we love most about size 16 Joann is how she’s leading the charge for body positivity in the industry – and isn’t afraid to call out people who challenge that.
The model, who is the daughter of Yolanda’s businessman brother Leo van de Herik, has hundreds of thousands of followers across Instagram and TikTok, where she pushes for change in an industry that has, for so long, promoted a very specific (and often unattainable) body type.
Most recently, Joann Van der Henrick uploaded a TikTok video titled: ‘When people say they don’t like fat girls’ in which she danced to a song with lyrics ‘I’ll be honest I don’t really understand it’ and it quickly went viral. We like to see it.
Joann has previously modelled for Debenhams in the UK and said while she’s always dreamed of being a model, she feared there wasn’t space in the industry for someone of her shape.
“I think it’s very important to show all the boys and girls out there that size doesn’t matter and that you’re perfect the way you are. I translate that into my work as a model and on social media,” she said at the time.
“I’m a strong believer in body-positivity and that every body is beautiful.” Hear, hear.
The fledgling fashion star has also modelled for SLiNK magazine and told them that whenever she’s really insecure about some part of her body, she just thinks: “But does it really matter?”.
She said: “Does it make me less of a human? Or just look at it another way and focus on the beautiful parts. Surround yourself with positive people. I was always surrounded by people who were negative about themselves, and that negative energy consumes you. You take that negative energy and start thinking that way about yourself as well. As soon as you feel that people take too much from you, leave them.”
Now based in The Netherlands, Joann is fast becoming a star in her own right and uses her social media to promote body security. Watch this space.
