This time last year, Austin Butler was basically an unknown name in Hollywood. Now, he’s a best actor nominee at the Oscars for playing one of the most beloved and iconic figures in American pop culture history. So why, Ashley Graham wondered during the red carpet pre-show, isn’t Butler’s girlfriend Kaia Gerber there to support the Elvis actor on this extra-special night? Don’t worry, friends. The answer is actually much sweeter than you think.
“I’ve got my best friend here with me, who is also my agent,” Butler responded when asked about his plus-one. “And I owe my career to him, so as a thank you, I wanted him to be by my side tonight.” Oscar nominees have been known to bring their parents, children, or other important relatives to the ceremony as their dates. (Here’s a whole list of sweet mother-daughter moments from this year alone.) Even so, I can’t say I’ve seen many actors shout out their agents—which is a shame, when you think about it.
Back in February, Butler told Access Hollywood about his plans to bring his agent and friend James Farrell to the Oscars. “I’ve known him since I was 17 years old, and he also happens to be my agent,” Butler said, per Yahoo! News. “We were friends first, and I would not have my career without him. The amount of times that he’s helping me to decide on whether or not to do something or he’s pushed me to. He’s believed in me in moments where maybe I didn’t believe in myself.”
Maybe Gerber will get an invite the next time Austin Butler is nominated for an Academy Award.
