She’s one of the most photographed performers in the world but Billie Eilish has banned press snappers from both of her upcoming Perth shows in the latest example of the extreme lengths mega stars will go to carefully managed their images.
The 20-year-old sings about being the bad guy but is steadfastly determined to avoid being photographed in anything other than the most flattering light.
Eilish will wrap up her Happily Ever After world tour at RAC Arena on Friday night. A pre-recorded concert special, filmed in London earlier this year, is set to air on Apple Music Live right after her Perth shows.
But don’t expect to see any professional photos of the singer rocking it out in front of a WA crowd.
The Grammy-award-winning star has banned press photographers from capturing either of her RAC Arena shows.
Agency photographers from Getty were permitted to shoot Sydney and Auckland shows — but could not release any of the images until they had been approved by Eilish’s management.
Eilish also has her own approved photographer that travels with her on tour but her hand-picked snapper is not covering the Perth shows.
With international musicians finally returning to our shores, it’s appearing to be harder for local media to gain access to these megastars.
Dua Lipa, Andrea Bocelli, Kings of Leon, Kendrick Lamar, and The Killers are just some of the big names set to perform in WA in the coming months.
It’s yet to be seen if they’ll follow suit when it comes to limiting access to photography at their shows.
There are already extensive terms and conditions attached to photographing touring artists, including how long a photographer is allowed to be at the concert as well as where and how images are used.
In some cases photographers are only permitted to capture the first two or three songs of a performance and are then ushered away before the performers can work up a sweat.
Beyonce famously banned all press photographers from her 2013 Mrs Cater world tour after a Super Bowl performance that yielded multiple unflattering shots.
Just last month, legendary rockers KISS performed at the same venue where Eilish will headline.
Unlike Eilish, they allowed for press photographers.
However, the substantial photo release form outlines several clauses, including granting the legendary band permission to use images taken by press photographers without having to pay for them, and for all photographs to be provided if requested.
Luckily for fans, Eilish does allow them to use their phones. However, RAC Arena policy states strictly no cameras with detachable lens, no iPads, no GoPros, and no audio or video recording devices.
