Almost no successful series or movie is saved from its reboot or continuation today in the Hollywood industry. But it seems that this will not be the case of The O.C., one of the most popular teen series of the early 2000s.
Premiering in 2003, the show aired on Fox for four seasons reaching 92 episodes for its finale in 2007. And although it may not seem like much for a tv production of that time, The O.C. It is remembered as one of the most successful teen productions in the history of television, and that is why for a long time now fans have been asking for a reunion, a continuation, or even a reboot.
And although given the popularity of the series and that so many others of the same style have done it, such as Teen Wolf recently, it seems that it will not happen with The O.C. Speaking on the Crew Call podcast, show creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage revealed why they think they couldn’t make it happen:
“I think we’re not going to do that. You know, we were producers on this Gossip Girl reboot that ran for a couple of season on HBO Max. That felt like it had more of a…there was a franchise to Gossip Girl, there’s an anonymous blogger who is kind of charting the lives of these characters in New York. And I think The O.C. was really just kind of specific to these characters, and it feels like we made something, we’re really grateful that 20 years later, people are still watching the show and still want to talk about the show. And we’re just going to leave it right there.”
What Was The O.C. About?
The series focuses on the story of Ryan Atwood, a rather conflicted young man who comes from a humble home, with economic and adaptation problems and a tragic past. However, his life takes a big turn when he is taken in by the Cohens, a wealthy family from Orange County.
Ryan quickly develops a friendship, almost brotherhood, with the Cohens’ son, Seth, who has also had a hard time adjusting at his school. The plot revolves around family, friendship, romance, and the experiences of Ryan and those around him.
The O.C. starred Ben Mackenzie as Ryan, Adam Brody as Seth, and Peter Gallagher and Kelly Rowan as the Cohens. They were joined by Mischa Barton as Marissa Cooper, Seth’s great love; Rachel Bilson as Summer Roberts, one of Ryan’s most complex relationships throughout the series and many more.
Despite the good reception and great popularity of the show, there was a huge controversy when in the third season, Marissa died in Ryan’s arms. Being one of the show’s main couples, it was hard to sustain continuity, and many believe that was the reason the series ended with the fourth installment.
