Why Thomas Tuchel fell out with Todd Boehly’s over Wesley Fofana transfer

The German was sacked last week and replaced by Graham Potter after Boehly decided, following the club’s mixed start to the campaign, that Tuchel was not the man to take the Blues forward.

Though the decision came earlier than expected, the writing looked to be on the wall for Tuchel following Boehly’s acquisition of the club.

The pair clashed almost immediately, with Boehly failing to impress Tuchel with his lack of knowledge over football operations.

Nevertheless, Tuchel oversaw around £260m of spending last summer as he was given more authority than he had enjoyed previously over the club’s transfer business.

The most expensive arrival was Fofana, who joined in a £70m move from Leicester City in the final week of the window.

Chelsea spent weeks in negotiations with the Foxes and eventually paid the club’s asking price.

It meant Tuchel started the season without the defenders he wanted but he was willing to wait for Fofana, even if he was angered by the lack of progress the club were making in negotiations.

But, even after striking a deal, the move was delayed further when Boehly insisted that Fofana underwent his medical in New York City.

The move, which is practically unheard of, angered Tuchel according to Sport Bild as the German wanted to integrate the Frenchman into his squad.

Fofana had to travel from the Midlands to London before taking a seven-hour flight to the east coast, where he underwent his medical and took a flight back to the UK.

The trip was seen as unnecessary by Tuchel, who was ‘furious’ that the Frenchman had to then combat jetlag on his return.
