New York City’s The McKittrick Hotel is a dining and entertainment destination unlike any in the city. While it’s home to the award-winning theatrical experience that tells Shakespeare’s classic tragedy Macbeth, called Sleep No More, it’s also home to several distinct dining and drinking concepts, rotating shows, live performances and more.
Gallow Green is a rooftop secret garden and restaurant that changes seasonally from a whimsical, lush oasis in the summer complete with blossoming flowers, hanging vines, herb gardens, twinkling lights to a cozy cabin winter wonderland with tartan blankets and plush sheepskin accents once the weather hits.
It’s a great places for hand crafted cocktails inspired by the hotel and its residents, like the Sleep No More with pea flower-infused vodka, elderflower, and rosé cider or the Gallow Green with bourbon, blue curaçao, citrus, and ginger. The menu is crafted by Executive Chef Pascal Le Seac’h with highlights that include the starters like the impressive garden-inspired crudite; fried calamari; and cheese curds with crispy cheddar.
Entrees include the steak au poivre with pink peppercorn sauce; chicken paillard with frisee salad; moussaka with vegan cheese; and grilled salmon. On the diverse menu is also a raw bar featuring dishes like yellowfin tuna crudo and taco bar selection ranging from chicken tinga to carnitas.
Gallow Green has also recently launched Champagne Brunch on the weekends that includes a buffet, a sketch artist, tarot card readings and live music. For two hours guests can treat themselves to all the beverages at the mimosa bar and unlimited food from several stations.
Guests can enjoy eggs from the omelet station; shrimp cocktail; salads that include a variety mixes like the red quinoa salad with baby kale and carrots; and a carving station featuring a whole salmon and porchetta with crispy skin seasoned with garlic, rosemary, fennel pollen, chili pepper and salt. The hot buffet features Amish fried chicken; moussaka with baked layers of roasted eggplant and more. There’s also a bread station and sweets station offering an array of croissants, fruits and yogurt.
The McKittrick Hotel’s jazz-inspired concert hall and cocktail lounge, The Manderley Bar is also on property, a place for guests to after-hours drinks and live music. Guests are transported to another era as they sip on libations that include the Old McKittrick with chichicapa Mezcal and cachaca or the Manderley Gimlet with gin, lejay cassis and cucumber.
Lastly there’s The Club Car which features dining experiences, musical varieties, train cars, and always changing roster of the city’s top performances. Currently The Club Car is hosting Speakeasy Magick, which showcases parlor magic and up-close-and-personal prestidigitation by the city’ s best magical talents.
This is an incredible performance that truly needs “be experienced to be believed,” says The McKittrick Hotel spokesperson. If you’ve never seen magic up-close-and-personal — or even if you have — this show will blow your mind.
We chatted with The McKittrick Hotel on the entertainment program and what’s in the works. Here’s what they had to say.
Talk about the entertainment program at The McKittrick Hotel. Are your shows rotating? Who comes up with them and how does it all fit into the programming at the property?
Sleep No More and Speakeasy Magick both enjoy an open run. We regularly host limited-engagement residencies, such as The Woman in Black and The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart, intimate concerts, and epic blowouts for Halloween and New Year’s Eve. There is always something new to discover.
What is the ideal evening at McKittrick? Could someone enjoy all of the venues in an evening?
Begin with dinner or drinks on the hotel’s rooftop garden escape, Gallow Green, followed by a performance of Sleep No More or Speakeasy Magick, then a nightcap with live jazz in Manderley Bar.
What is the story behind Sleep No More?
Created by Punchdrunk in the UK, Sleep No More is a fully immersive, nearly wordless retelling of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy, Macbeth, intertwined with elements of Hitchcock-style film noir. Audiences move freely through the story at their own pace, so that each experience is unique.
What’s the inspiration for the dining at McKittrick? What drives the menu at Gallow Green specifically?
Like every experience, it is transporting. Seasonal cocktails and cuisine are presented in an unparalleled setting that feels like a total escape from modern day New York.
What’s in the works?
This season, highlights include the hotel’s annual Halloween and New Year’s Eve Balls, as well as the return of winter rooftop The Hideout at Gallow Green, serving comfort dishes and hot cocktails for the colder months.
